Growing in the Spirit

Maybe you clicked on the tab “Get God Now – It’s Free!” Maybe you accepted Christ some other way at some other time. Either way, if you prayed the acceptance prayer, you have accepted Christ’s gift of grace and are assured a place in heaven. It’s that simple. Your spiritual transformation journey now begins. Open your bible and look up these verses:

2 Peter 1: 5-10

Here’s the instruction. If you now at last have faith, take every day and add to it. Write down Peter’s list and achieve one after another.

2 Peter 1: 3 and 1 Thessalonians 5: 24

If you ever doubt you can do all these things, or if you are ever tempted to go back to your pain, remember where your power now lies and be assured of victory. Take your thoughts captive and submit them to God for the win. See Colossians 1: 9-14 for a prayer that will never fail you.

John 15: 1-11

This is your guarantee that you will win. It is also your instruction. Verse 7 says to make His words live in you. Stay in the Word and pray. Daily. Connect to other Christians through study and the church, and you will bear much fruit.

Write these verses down, or better yet, memorize them. They will serve you all your life.

And remember: If You Accepted Jesus as Your Ticket to Heaven, You Are Saved (John 3:16, John 14:6-7)!

A Word of Warning

After you accept Jesus, and your heart is bubbling over to share His Word with the world, expect a backlash. Nonbelievers will mock and ridicule you. People who consider themselves spiritual enough, without Jesus, will say He is not the only way. They will argue over this point. Good works alone, however, are not enough to enter the kingdom of heaven.

Ephesians 2:8-9

You have been saved by grace through believing. You did not save yourselves; it was a gift from God. It was not the result of your own efforts, so you cannot brag about it. (NCV)

No one can ever be so good. In fact, it would be arrogant even to suggest that you could enter heaven on your own merit, without the sacrifice of Jesus covering your sins. If this were possible, Jesus dying on the cross would be joke.

Romans 3:10-12

As the Scriptures say:
There is no one who always does what is right,
not even one.
There is no one who understands.
There is no one who looks to God for help.
   All have turned away.
Together, everyone has become useless.
There is no one who does anything good;
there is not even one.” (NCV)

At the last day, many people who thought “being good” would be good enough to get into heaven will end up sadly disappointed. So, accept the truth while you can. Accept Jesus into your heart now, while you still have time. All He asks of you is your simple faith in Him.

Mark 10:15

Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter it.” (NKJV)

Matthew 22:14

Yes, many are invited, but only a few are chosen. (NCV)

What To Do With Your Salvation

Before Jesus left, He gathered His disciples and “commissioned” them to go make disciples of all of us. This job is not reserved for clergy only. It’s our duty, ordained by Jesus Himself. Thank God for that. We all have a divine purpose!

Matthew 28:16-20

The eleven followers went to Galilee to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. On the mountain they saw Jesus and worshiped him, but some of them did not believe it was really Jesus. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All power in heaven and on earth is given to me. So go and make followers of all people in the world. Baptize them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach them to obey everything that I have taught you, and I will be with you always, even until the end of this age.” (NCV)

Peter reiterates what Jesus said, confirming that we are all messengers who find our way in Jesus. We are God’s very own priests. Hallelujah! Spread the word!

1 Peter 2:9

But you are a chosen people, royal priests, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession. You were chosen to tell about the wonderful acts of God, who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. (NCV)

Living With Your Salvation

What are you supposed to do once you are “saved?” Well, Paul gives us the instructions. I have found that these instructions are both super easy and extremely difficult to follow. Easy because all we need to do is accept Jesus. Done deal. Difficult because everything we have lived with since birth conflicts with this decision.

Romans 10:9

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and if you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you will be saved. (NCV)

Romans 12:2

Do not be shaped by this world; instead be changed within by a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect. (NCV)

Now, here comes your help. It’s the Holy Spirit. The decision to accept Jesus and turn from the world is supported moment-to-moment, heartbeat-to-heartbeat, by the Holy Spirit, who stands between us and the world. There’s no other way we can live up to the standard. Once you accept Jesus, He sends the Holy Spirit to guide you in your daily struggle. Jesus promised this. Paul confirms it.

John 3:5

But Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born from water and the Spirit, you cannot enter God’s kingdom.” (NCV)

John 14:16-18

I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he lives with you and he will be in you. “I will not leave you all alone like orphans; I will come back to you. (NCV)

Galatians 5:22-26

But the Spirit produces the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. There is no law that says these things are wrong. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their own sinful selves. They have given up their old selfish feelings and the evil things they wanted to do. We get our new life from the Spirit, so we should follow the Spirit. We must not be proud or make trouble with each other or be jealous of each other. (NCV)

Once you “get it” and you accept Jesus – and you understand that your sins are forgiven no matter how bad they were or how long it’s been going on –– the Spirit will always be at your side, equipped to rush in and protect and guide you. Just call on Him. John tells us we have guaranteed access to Him through this powerful tool: prayer.

1 John 5:14-15

And this is the boldness we have in God’s presence: that if we ask God for anything that agrees with what he wants, he hears us. If we know he hears us every time we ask him, we know we have what we ask from him. (NCV)

Go to Heaven When You Die

Here’s where Jesus explains the simple truth of what it takes to get into heaven, as incredible as this may be. And I thank God it is this way, because I could never behave well enough to earn the right on my own!

John 14:6

Jesus answered, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. The only way to the Father is through me. (NCV)

Read that last verse again. Jesus is the only way. Many people want to argue this. However, Jesus Himself said it. To argue this makes Jesus out to be a liar, insane or both. I don’t know about you, but I am not that smart.

Later, Paul clarifies that we get to heaven not by “good works,” but by faith in Jesus. He is the only way!

Galatians 2:16

Yet we know that a person is made right with God not by following the law, but by trusting in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus, that we might be made right with God because we trusted in Christ. It is not because we followed the law, because no one can be made right with God by following the law. (NCV)

Meet God

The purpose of my book was to introduce you to God, your Father. Of course, there is no substitute for the actual Word of God. In this verse, God tells Moses what His name is…”I AM.”

Exodus 3:14

Then God said to Moses, “I AM who I AM. When you go to the people of Israel, tell them, ‘I AM sent me to you.’” (NCV)

More than 400 years later, Jesus shows up and tells the Pharisees that He is “I am” and that He actually existed before Abraham was born! Quite a claim. Effectively, He said He is God, a claim that ultimately got Him crucified.

John 8:58

Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, before Abraham was even born, I am!” (NCV)

If Jesus was telling the truth, then He was God, and He did pay our sin debt as the perfect sacrifice; anyone who accepts Him is saved. Jesus truly was – and is – the Messiah, the Savior.

John 3:16

God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son so that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but have eternal life. (NCV)

The True Word of God

The Old and New Testaments both proclaim that what is written in the Bible is true and truly the Word of God. So disregard it at your own risk. The place to meet God is in His Word. He reveals everything about Himself that we need to know in Scripture. That is why the Bible is the most important book you could ever read. It is a living text – literally alive. You cannot read this book without it affecting you at some level. And, you can read it all your life, every day, and still find refreshment in its pages.

Psalm 119:160

Your words are true from the start,
and all your laws will be fair forever. (NCV)

Jesus said…

Matthew 5:18

I tell you the truth, nothing will disappear from the law until heaven and earth are gone. Not even the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will be lost until everything has happened. (NCV)

And Paul and Peter clarified it saying…

2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for showing people what is wrong in their lives, for correcting faults, and for teaching how to live right. (NCV)

2 Peter 1:16, 19

When we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not telling just clever stories that someone invented. But we saw the greatness of Jesus with our own eyes. This makes us more sure about the message the prophets gave. It is good for you to follow closely what they said as you would follow a light shining in a dark place, until the day begins and the morning star rises in your hearts. (NCV)

God’s Gift

The Word is God’s gift to you. To speak against it, without ever having read it, is intellectual fraud. I encourage you to not stop at “God on a Chalkboard” in your pursuit of the truth. Read the entire Bible, again and again, up unto your last day, and you will be blessed. I wish I had known this sooner!
