Living With Your Salvation

What are you supposed to do once you are “saved?” Well, Paul gives us the instructions. I have found that these instructions are both super easy and extremely difficult to follow. Easy because all we need to do is accept Jesus. Done deal. Difficult because everything we have lived with since birth conflicts with this decision.

Romans 10:9

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and if you believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, you will be saved. (NCV)

Romans 12:2

Do not be shaped by this world; instead be changed within by a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect. (NCV)

Now, here comes your help. It’s the Holy Spirit. The decision to accept Jesus and turn from the world is supported moment-to-moment, heartbeat-to-heartbeat, by the Holy Spirit, who stands between us and the world. There’s no other way we can live up to the standard. Once you accept Jesus, He sends the Holy Spirit to guide you in your daily struggle. Jesus promised this. Paul confirms it.

John 3:5

But Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born from water and the Spirit, you cannot enter God’s kingdom.” (NCV)

John 14:16-18

I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper to be with you forever— the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he lives with you and he will be in you. “I will not leave you all alone like orphans; I will come back to you. (NCV)

Galatians 5:22-26

But the Spirit produces the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. There is no law that says these things are wrong. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their own sinful selves. They have given up their old selfish feelings and the evil things they wanted to do. We get our new life from the Spirit, so we should follow the Spirit. We must not be proud or make trouble with each other or be jealous of each other. (NCV)

Once you “get it” and you accept Jesus – and you understand that your sins are forgiven no matter how bad they were or how long it’s been going on –– the Spirit will always be at your side, equipped to rush in and protect and guide you. Just call on Him. John tells us we have guaranteed access to Him through this powerful tool: prayer.

1 John 5:14-15

And this is the boldness we have in God’s presence: that if we ask God for anything that agrees with what he wants, he hears us. If we know he hears us every time we ask him, we know we have what we ask from him. (NCV)
